My task as an artist

Of course I am going to say things you do not like. I’m saying it because nobody else is not, because we are supposed to be scared and be careful of what we say and do. Of course I am going to do other than what you expect me to do, I do as I see best. You do not like honesty, it is clear. Honesty hurts, it is brutal. There is no other way of growing and evolving than being honest. Of course I am going to bring up issues you do not want to see and hear about. Why am I talking about things that were? Aren’t we over those things? Why do I look back like it would matter what happened before? It is because nothing has changed and the same happens over and over again. Things that were are also things that will be. We haven’t changed that much if at all. My task as an artist is to make you look at yourself, make you see what is going on, what happens, what chances do we have and what if we do not have any?

That is also a task of an activist. Can one be activist alone? Obviously yes.

What we need is what we are?

We are in desperate need constantly. It shows on social media, on magazines, in everything that is placed around. Our emotional life grows out from bodily and mental yearnings, lacking and trying to fill in. To learn what can be filled and what is not necessary is important. It is about prioritizing one’s needs and deeds. To hold down desires is the stoic and religious demand which is still held an ideal even though constant growth is a victorious and ultimate demand. To do the impossible and win, conquer and possess. Hedonism is bad, a sign of decay and is when we give all power to our lust and when we keep lusting for more without care and consideration. Overeating, drinking, thinking that via owning we become better people, through becoming famous we will be admired and looked up, when we are rich we are better than etc. Whatever the needs are everyone has them, everyone battles with them. We are in constant situation where we are compared to each other and we are not enough, we do not have enough and to be good we must gain more. This winning and competing way of living and thinking may work up to a point. When is the braking point we will see, it is going to be smashing. But all this it is nothing more than survival of the fittest, survival of humans who have illusions of grandiose. The fittest and mightiest are those who can grasp the best things for themselves and keep them.

To feel pure joy, feel content, satisfied, have admiration, love and fulfilment are lovely things and we like to indulge, coddle and pamper ourselves and those we love. Needless to say we are able to control our needs very poorly meaning hunger grows while eating. There is always more to be had. Human is a dreamer. The further the better. Basic needs must be filled or we will die. At the moment fulfilling those very basic need could be done more rationally and economically without bloodshed, without massive operations, without causing of epidemic destruction. How to fulfil basic needs of all beings is the question of what can be taken and what must be given back. How much can be taken for granted and when it is time to slow down. Fractured world does not work as one big whole. There are needs which are not met that cause conflicts. Forever growth economy-wise is a dream which is seen a reality as there are natural resources that are not exploited. Idea is what is not yet used all the way it shall be so quite soon. There are needs that are not heard nor seen, they are ignored.

How well needs are to be fulfilled like need for nature to be clean and left in peace. In which ways do we see our needs in comparison to needs of others? By fulfilling our urges where does the limit go of enough because as rational humans we must know when to stop but we do not,. We do not know when to share, what is mine to take, what is not. To give is part of learning the importance of collective fulfilling of needs. To be passive and still is a need. It can be very beneficial for the environment and for people. At the moment tendency is as we know that Champagne does not flow down as the trickle down theory suggests, everybody may not like Champagne. How does it show that to do nothing could be beneficial is a case of deep analysis of how our desires reflect to society, and what is to do nothing. How our inbuilt needs and deeds make society and how our relationships, connections, networks work as functional tools we need.

Word revolution, meaning of revolution.

It is a favourite strong expression, expressing will, a song with a catchy tune. Still a word about innovation which we instantly wake up for, an instant happening put up, launching of a product, a brand, event which raises attention to and interest in what is new at the moment. Revolution is in the moment. What new will this product bring to us as a community and to individuals who wish to alter their lives. It, the change factor, being an idea, a tool, concept, way to do things differently. What is the revolution we like, we like to repeat like a mantra, salvation? What has been explored and found via revolutions till this day is human character, how slowly anything truly changes, what it takes to change society, the sacrifices, work and effort, faith and how easily revolution disappoints. It flops when people get tired, when people fail, when people lie, when people are not willing to work together for wellbeing of all, when revolution means different things, different outcomes and means.

In making revolution people need to be active, take stand, put themselves at jeopardy and risk, with revolution we are with those who oppose the unchangeable something in the way for necessary refreshing. Invented, determinate, no other alternative but to act, moving forward to discarding the old? What is the new then? It better be better than the old, a new name is not enough. We like to spin with it, idea of constant reinvention and illusion. It, the action, hope of change we like to be with without catching breath, hang around with, stay, be thrilled and make our lives better.

When revolution happens all the time everywhere it is merely a normal development, an everyday event, but we pay attention to it still because it is revolution. We mention and talk about revolution. Ask is this revolution and maybe we are not sure. Should we take part, is it safe and is it about being safe. What does revolution look like? Because it is revolution, an important occasion and something special, development which is meaningful for many may take place. Extraordinary, extraordinary, extraordinary, there where there is no room for extraordinary. What happens to extraordinary without revolution is suffocation, silencing. Extraordinary is the very ingredient of revolution, special which is banned, not found, not looked for, not missed until there is a bunch of people who show this is what we need and must do. When you repeat the same word what happens? Society and culture evolve is the expectation when revolution is about to take place, not backwards but forward to absorb thinking and technology which is fitted into the old as better, sold as better, as making a difference.

Come play with me

Art hires bullies and incompetence: my well-educated analysis which is based on experience. Experience is bad which I have been wondering how I am so unlucky, or there truly is something seriously wrong but not enough leverage to make that needed change. Some parties do not look for change in art because stagnant state of things works better for them.

When one first begins studying sculpting and your teacher is sexist chauvinist, strongly biased male to whom pedagogy seems to be an unknown concept, one gets a pretty good idea of what to expect when one graduates. So it all is educational after all. There are no illusions whatsoever of what lies ahead and how slowly things change in the arts, which hugely relies on tradition, what comes to gender roles, social and career mobility, position and power of institutions and money, what is good art, what can be shown and said. Mostly art looks back so keenly because it likes the male heroes. Needless to say I have argued and questioned a lot at art school and was deeply unliked because of that. Old fashioned are also ways to do business, put up exhibitions, funding, how artists and artistry are seen and treated, how much there is preconception and thinking you know even when you do not know shit. That is of course when you need the consultants. You can always rely on knowledge of a consultant but artist is an underdog if he or she is not well-known and well-networked. What else is there other than self-interest and all one can do is work for only one’s own benefit, why else do it. Business in which one has to be an expert and know a lot there are many doing the work who do not have the needed capabilities: understanding, courage and knowledge, capabilities to spark change, unbiased, only talk is what happens, which does not change anything, just like politicians do.

As curious as it sounds when you start looking at the issue of what kind of people are drawn to business of art, it could not be more clear: it is made to those who strive to win, be best at posing or at least look like they are good at something, mostly the latter. The importance of image cannot be emphasized enough. To work in art you have to have a big ego to stand behind your work, be confident enough to stretch as far as possible with ideas of your own, try out ideas which you believe in and very often only you, fail or succeed, and accepting the result to move on with all the enthusiasm possible. What kinds of results we accept as a community and in what kind of environment we want to work plays a big part of how to choose one’s perspective, on which side to stand and look into the scene where one is to create, be creative. How creative is the art world? What is the scene where art is shown or made to exist and why is it so narrow and unwelcoming? It is not new that narcissism is a regular trait for artists and in the arts in general and need to be admired for one’s position, networks and art must be one thing probably. All want to have the fame, which is one thing essential in art, admiration, grandiose, infinity, eternal art and eternal unforgettable artists, heroes. Artists are admired when they get fame and fortune. Fame is much talked about as it is the gold pot which might be found when one is talented and lucky enough. What is luck, how one gets lucky and what is part of talent there? It is a weird business where money circulates, art gets centered to certain places and artists have to be presented in certain places to have a name, be seen by right people and be noticed within the system. So to be stepped over is not irregular, to be sexually harassed either, minimised, discriminated, talked about in ill manner happens regularly. There are things to be expected but still they strike always as surprise because one wants to believe in kindness and good intentions. Cynicism is the first impression I get, always. It is no wonder, I am always up against a crowd of fanatics who think they know better and are better because art is about finding the truth, being good and admired, and those who are on pedestals think, they have found it and are deserving of their status.

There are those who like to repeat over and over again one idea, imprint it where ever they can because it is theirs and it represents the good they have come up with, themselves, something unchangeable, an era, an -ism, history, tradition, spectacle, experience after which tourists are expected to travel and spend money for. When we starve the idea of art into movable modules that function as branded palaces for money, it is art for money and art for business’ sake. It is tourism that dictates and the tourist is offered an art awe grandiose to witness and experience, remember, photograph, be educated by. An art awe is.., sensation, uplifting, knowledge, learning, the act of looking and feeling the once in a life experience, time to touch, something grand again, special, new or old and spectacular, always bigger and more expensive. To find the spectacular it has to be imported. Interesting is when new art is made it often is made in the marginal and by those who have rebelled the establishment, education, hierarchy and traditions, those who have made the most interesting art and have had the lasting changing impact on art are the dissidents. Always there is a clash and crush necessary for that necessary change to happen. The procedure of producing art is machinery of media coverage, expensiveness, size, names, what catches the eye, mind and heart. To preserve quality and process of the creating progress and the new which can be exciting, cynicism is not good at all.

To see someone, what does it mean?

The machine of our mind and how it is tuned to notice things, to which details we pay attention to and which we do not, for those who consider outer characteristics important measures of people the machine truly is working only one way. For those to whom to know someone is to look at and pick up clues to which stick and rely on, machine mind works as any factory robot. It is the simplest way of discriminating and separating humans. Stupidity with this kind of method of knowing anything is that most information stay unfound. Lazy mind trusts information seen and trusts the idea that any peculiarity and difference is a threat and laughably to be shut out without need to be understood as normal part of humanity. What is normal can be very narrow image and most of us do not want to understand or expand their horizon with variety. Variety and multiculturalism is dangerous and flammable, one can ask why so? Clashes between opposites are more likely to happen because neither can give up their truth. To move closer to one another means desire to understand and accept. Saddest thing is when it is the parent who does not want to understand and see his/her child as she/he is, when parents have their image set what child should be and reality is quite different of the imagined one. To imagine someone to be something and then be disappointed when that illusion does not fit reality. When someone is more than the imagined set of characteristics, ideals to fit into, for example ideal of a woman. That ideal is a highly minimized human being made to serve and settle for the given ideas, person who must be afraid to make an exception trying to do differently. https://www.good.is/articles/ovarian-psycos
To see someone or that someone to stay unseen can be a choice or it can be a given strategy. We don’t want to see, we don’t want to be seen. We choose to display parts of ourselves like toes, harmless, and we must be seen to be whole persons still. We do not trust people whom we do not see. How seen can we be or is good for us to be seen is an interesting issue as to hide oneself can be done in so many ways and the expose of oneself plays tunnel-like vision where images move fast, where we look and look but don’t see and fun of the process where we play with image of ourselves, fun of exposure, fun of visibility and being recognized, fun of speed and the issue of what is actually being exposed blurring.

I like to think non-place is a place where people have to visit or live where they voluntarily don’t wish to.

Place is experienced emotionally and with our senses, partly made personally, one by one individually, place existing on personal and on public level within human reason and randomness for human activity and always with nature, in harmony or in disharmony. Places for lives of people to function for our benefit, we sensing, using, monitoring, analyzing places we go to, we like and dislike, live at, walk through, work at, see, avoid via movement, need and human consciousness we connect or disconnect with places. We have a need to make our marks to places we visit to show that we have been there or take marks or pieces from places, out of/from places with us to remember and prove having been. Imagining a place and experiencing, remembering, reliving, becoming part of a place, making an emotional connection/contact to a place and what that place is all about, what this place means to you, is for and why are you thinking about it, going there, staying there, why are we where we are and what kind of things do we pay attention to in a place, what make places of ours on emotional level, in negative and positive way. Can we own a place in negative sense, feel that it is ours and be part of that ugliness, belong there making something new out of filth, that an ugly place is part of us in all its ugliness, uselessness, coldness, disconnectedness and powerlessness? Is a desire of making a non-place connected to our need of making an impression of what we are, to show strength in despair, despite despair, what we long for but fail trying to forget what we are not, or is non-place made to not be used as we try to be useful and seem effective but be abandoned to remind us how alone and desperate we are? We want to impress by being at a luxurious place, beautiful and rare, difficult to reach, expensive and extraordinary and by doing so state the wonderfulness and specialty of ours but still it is only the surface of things when it is to show off and a place is an extension to our personality and identity as part of us but better than most.
